FOR Calgary Project
Serve the City
Fall 2024
This October we are inviting every person from our church to participate with us in a month-long initiative to serve our city.
On Sunday, October 6 we cut our regular worship service short, in order to actively participate in a day of service for our city.
WE ARE FOR CALGARY
WE ARE FOR CALGARY
We are called by Jesus to live out self-giving love. All we have is from God so we give it back to God’s mission in the world and to ministry in our local church. We serve on ministry teams, contribute financially, and work together on FOR Calgary and global missional causes.
TO PARTICIPATE:
Sign up for the various opportunities we have to serve with our local mission partners for the rest of the month of October! Sign up on your own, with your One Group, or your friends and family!
OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDE:
UCM Friendship Partners Program: The Friendship Program, organized by UCM, our ministry partner working on Calgary's university campuses, is geared towards helping international students develop meaningful friendships with Canadian families. This is a beautiful opportunity to begin friendship with international students, having them over for tea, sharing a meal on Canadian holidays or inviting them to participate in family events! Email Kelly! johnsok@ucalgary.ca
Mainsprings Pregnancy and Family Support Volunteer: Mainsprings, (formerly Calgary Pregnancy Care Centre) has a variety of volunteer opportunities. You could work directly with clients or teach pre-natal and parenting classes, or work behind the scenes in roles including administration, cleaning, sorting and packaging donations, photography, fundraising and event planning. If you have a skill or talent that you would like to offer, Mainsprings can find a role that is a good fit for you!
Brentwood Community Pantry: Sign up for a day to help clean, maintain and put food from our supplies in the food pantry, and to connect and build relationships with the people using the pantry. Your involvement ensures we can continue to serve those in need. Together, let’s be the hands and feet of Christ in our community!
Volunteer with Kingdom Outreach: Kingdom Outreach gets food and groceries that would otherwise end up in the landfill. Brentview uses some to create hampers for our neighbours and stock our community pantry! Due to the large amount of food they manage, they often need help organizing in their warehouse.
We appreciate your continued support for the
Brentwood Community Pantry
Brentwood Community Pantry is a mutual aid project aimed at addressing food equity in Calgary by helping those facing financial insecurity access free, fresh and healthy food 24/7.
WHAT
Food insecurity happens when people have scarce or limited access to food due to their financial situation. While all types of people are affected by food insecurity, the most impacted groups are; immigrants & refugees, Indigenous peoples, those living with disability, the LGBTQ+ community, people on social assistance and our homeless population.
Low income and high living costs create a disparity between what people need and what they can afford. AHS studies show that 1 in every 10 households in our province is food insecure.
We also accept donations of warm clothing items, and have found that items like diapers and feminine hygiene products are constantly and quickly cycling out of the pantry.
WHY
Access to fresh healthy food is reserved to those in position to financial privilege. We believe that this needs to change, and we want to give access to EVERYONE.
HOW
Continue to redirect food to the pantry! We are seeing growing numbers of students, women, and children stopping by week to week. We are accepting donations of grab and go snacks and non-perishable food at this time. Why not host a food drive for the Pantry and mention us to get a shout out on Instagram? @forcalgary
